On November 24th of 1973 a United States Navy Douglas Super DC-3 airplane was forced to make an emergency crash landing on the black sandy beach of Sólheimasandur after running out of fuel. Fortunately, all crew managed to survive the impact. Having been abandoned for over 4 decades while enduring the harsh Icelandic weather, all that is left of the United States Navy cargo plane is the fuselage that has remained intact since it crashed more than four decades ago. It is a fascinating and rather eery sight.
The Aurora Borealis. Taken on a cold night in November, just outside the town of Höfn on Iceland's southeast shore. We first spotted the faint, green glow while taking photos at the Hornafjördur mountain range just before midnight. So we jumped in the car, took off down the road, and ended up right underneath them. By the time we arrived, they were in full effect. It was an incredible and almost disorienting experience. They danced and swirled all around us, blowing almost as if being carried by the wind. And they were—the solar wind. It was a magnificent display of creation.
